Russia's interest in Nepal's Railway Expansion

Russia's interest in Nepal's Railway Expansion

For the first time since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Russia has shown interest in expanding Nepal's railways. Although there was investment in Nepal's major infrastructure before the dissolution of the Union, there was no Russian investment in any important infrastructure after that.

Russia's Ambassador to Nepal Alexei Novikov paid a courtesy call on Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Basanta Kumar Nembang and expressed interest in investing in Nepal's infrastructure sector. During a meeting at the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport in Singha Durbar, Ambassador Novikov said that Russia was willing to invest in the expansion of Nepal's railways. A letter of intent has also been submitted to the ministry on behalf of Russian Railways.

During the meeting, Minister Nembang said that despite the good relations between the two countries due to lack of coordination in recent times after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, there was no significant partnership in the infrastructure sector.

Stating that metro rail is needed to facilitate traffic management and transportation in Kathmandu but lacks technology and skilled manpower as well as investment, Minister Nembang said that the metro rail has been prepared, pre-feasibility study and detailed project report (DPR) of some sections have been prepared. He said that he was ready to provide it.

After receiving the detailed technical and economic report from the Russian side, the Government of Nepal is ready to hold further discussions with Minister Nembang.

Mentioning that the Russian technology related to railways is excellent in Russia and other countries of the world, the Russian delegation has mentioned that it will be a cornerstone for Nepal as well. Mentioning that Japan has adopted Russian railway technology in the hilly areas, the delegation said that it is ready to transfer the technology to Nepal as well.

Infrastructure such as Kanti Children's Hospital, Panauti Hydroelectric Station, Pathlaiya-Dhalkebar section of East-West Highway, Janakpur Cigarette Industry, Agricultural Tools Factory, Birgunj Sugar Mill and Rosin and Turpine Plant were constructed in Nepal with Russian assistance.

Secretary at the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport Rabindranath Shrestha, Joint Secretary Ram Hari Pokhrel and Director General of the Railway Department Pramila Devi Bajracharya were present at the meeting.
